I've been making flowers for the first time today from shop bought fondant mixed with tylose powder. I'm using the generally recommended amount of tylose (1/2 teaspoon for every 250lbs fondant) and rolling it pretty thin, but not paper thin.

The problem is, when using the ball tool, the edges don't ruffle like I've seen on tutorials. They do get thinned out a lot and have a slight curve, but then the very tips of the edges start to crack. It doesn't look terrible for a first attempt, but what am I doing wrong? It seems like if I rolled it thinner, it would crack easier...but I don't know.... would adding less or more tylose help? Maybe the foam I'm using isn't soft enough?

Thanks for any input.

Make sure your ball tool is half on the gumpaste and half on the mat. Also if your gumpaste is sticking at all, you may want to dust with a tiny bit of cornstarch so it will move a little easier.

Hi Rebecca67e,  I only use shop bought fondant mixed with tylose for modelling work, not for flower work, it is better to use either shop bought gumpaste as this will give your much better finish, or you can google the recipe for making your own gumpaste/flowerpaste (UK) HTH  :).

AUse gumpaste, not modeling paste.

Fondant + tylose= modeling paste, NOT gumpaste.

I second the othesr advise.  Only use gumpaste.

For flowers I also use gumpaste, and any other figurines, small flower decorations etc  I use fondant + tylose mixed in.
