Career day- ideas for WOW-show off cakes for Career Day for kids?

I'm not a professional cake decorator, but I would love to participate in career day at my son's elementary school because I think it could be fun for them and myself. :)  I've never been able to because my old day job was boring and no one want to hear about it. They have added the word "talent" to the application form, so I figure I can do that!

I have made some mighty cool cakes in my time, but I wondered if any of you knew of any of your WOW cakes that take minimal time to do part of them in front of the kids??

I have thought about it, and the 3-d spiderman cake (with the dummy head) has been the biggest statement maker and got the biggest OOOOHS, but that requires a lot of dynamics.....

I know I should bring my airbrush, because that is super fun for kids to see......

And.....my 3d Elmo cake was awesome because of the hair, but these are fourth graders and they probably don't want to see Elmo.......

The 3d doll cake is super easy, but the boys will be yawn, and I have a son who I want to be cool in front of :)

Any suggestions and or links to pictures or ideas to wow the kids would be so appreciated!!! It is in November so I could even do a themed Christmas cake.  I don't have a feel for how easy a cake is just by looking at it, as I have done some "easy" looking ones that were just a nightmare for me, which is why I'm asking. I am not a beginner, nor super advanced, but I could probably work in a bakery (I did work at a Publix bakery as a cake decorator there).

THANKS!

Hi this sounds great. icon_smile.gif your son will be thrilled I'm sure. Just a thought. I'm sure you will get some great advice from others who know the biz plus... but I wonder if you could do a quick lesson as part of your talk and have them all decorate and be able to eat a cupcake? Or I guess they could maybe eat whatever you make?

Either way - if at all possible for them to learn And join in the fun - that could be cool. Like maybe a dragon cake where you have the cake buttercream ready and then add horns wings etc. made from fondant/gum paste? And maybe they could help take turns cutting scales and/or putting them on?

If this is a really bad idea others will let you know. 😊 I used to teach and always preferred a lot of control or controlled chaos depending on the class taught. But I wouldn't really know about the cake part as I'm new to all this. Can't wait to see what others suggest and how your day turns out!

How about a minion from Despicable Me 1 or 2? The mutated purple minions even have hair.  I think that would appeal to both boys and girls of about that age. I have a 3rd grade boy.

I don't think I would attempt having a whole class decorate a cake or cupcake. Chaos, mess, and purchasing a minimum of 1 tip apiece. If you wanted them to do something, I'd give them 1 cookie or cupcake apiece and a ziploc freezer baggie of icing with the corner snipped off and have them decorate without a tip.

I defiantly agree with this. I think Despicable Me is appropriate for that age and both boys and girls. I also think a cupcake would be a comple disaster to have 20 elmentary students decorate! I do however think a cookie and baggie of icing is a fantastic idea!

Good luck! I'm sure whatever you choose will be great, and the kids will all be talking about how cool you are!

A minion cupcake is perfect! But no, I wasn't going to let the kids do anything, just watch.  The school is strict and probably wouldn't let me do anything like that anyway.

I was just going to sit in the front and tell them about my craft. :)

Maybe mike wazowski? You can prepare the eye and teeth and limbs before you go and just stick them on?
