I want to make a wedding cake that has several round cakes pushed together to form the bottom tier with a standard stacked cake on top to form the remaining tiers. I've seen it several times, but never in person. I want to know how to structure it, but I can't find any information (most likely because I don't know what to call it!). Does anyone know how to build/support this cake or what it's called so I can research it?

First of all...i need to say..this not my cake...but I know the person who did it....

It's all about your dowel rods.   Even the top tier is sitting on 4 round 6" cakes.   The cakes need to sit on support.

I would think there would be a dummy cake nestling in the middle of the real round ones. That's how I would do it anyway. The real cake sits on the cake dummy, avoiding the need for dowels.
