Do You Put Anything On Your Fondant-Smoother Tool Before Using It?

I covered my first cake in fondant on my own, and when I went to use the fondant smoother, it started to drag the fondant a little. I ended up using my hand to smooth it mostly because I was afraid I would scratch or tear the fondant. Do you ever put shortening on the smoother?? Or anything? THANKS

If I feel it starting to drag I sometimes put a little dusting of corn starch on my smoother.
