Southerners HELP... sweet potato pie recipe

OK I'm from the south... of Canada  and need help.  An American who just moved here would like sweet potato pie for Thanksgiving.  It's this weekend for us in Canada.  I would really like to make this for her.  I tried the Cook's illustrated sweet potato pie but it only used 1/4tsp nutmeg and just tasted like I was eating my sweet potatoes on a tart shell.  So... what should a true southern sweet potato pie taste like... just sweet potatoes???? Ladies and Gents of the South I would appreciate any comments or recipes that tell me what it truly should be.  Thanks y'all y'all!

It is similar to pumpkin pie if that helps. Here in Texas, we prefer sweet potato to pumpkin. I bake my sweet potatoes in the microwave then mix it with the beater blade of my kitchen aid. This is my recipe: 2 cups sweet potatoes 2 beaten eggs 1/2 cup sugar 1 tall can evaporated milk 1 tsp cinnamon 1/2tsp nutmeg 1/2tsp salt. Combine it all in a large mixing bowl stiring just until combined. Pour into a deep dish pie crust and bake at 375.for about 45 minutes. It will be kind of bland but you can adjust the nutmeg and cinnamon if you like a more pronounced flavor. Hth.

Sweet potato pie is by far better than pumpkin! Your recipe looks great! I've made it a few times, but my mom is the master!

I use that recipe but I double the spices, so good!

Thank you so much for advice... I thought 1/4 tsp of one spice was just too little but I have nothing to compare it too.  The American client should be happy and maybe I will start a new trend here.

I love sweet Potatoes  so I might make some for myself... other than the test run my friends and I ate.

Going to up the spices.  Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

Upping the spices really improved the sweet potato pie and then I put marshmallows on top.  Customer was very happy.  But we both think maybe next time I should add just a bit of pumpkin to it.  Hope that doesn't offend anyone but the all sweet potato just seems like what I eat on my dinner plate.

Thank you so much all who gave suggestions.

Traditionally sweet potato pie is only very lightly spiced.  You can't compare it to pumpkin pie because it's totally different.  Here is a good recipe.

It's better to use baked or steamed potatoes instead of boiled ones.
