Don't stress just think of it as playing with modeling clay :).  If you add Tylose powder to your fondant the figurine will set and dry faster and will last a long time if kept dry and sealed.  I made some figurines a month before a cake was due and it was so much easier when it came to finishing the cake because the figurines were ready to just set on the cake.
