How tall should a cake be for decorating?

I'm just wanting to know how tall is the average decorated cake. How many layers of cake in one tier? Also, when filling how thick should it be?
My wedding cake was bought from Walmart, and yes, I am ashamed!

My cakes are 4 -4 1/2" tall. I bake 2" cakes & torte them. That's a total of 4 layers.

It's never "just cake!"

You may get a cake for $way to little but you won't get this cake!

I bake 2 cakes and torte each into 2 layers. My cakes end up with 3 layers of cake and ganache in between each one. Final cake is between 4" and 4.5" high. I smear the left over layer with ganache and hubby takes it to work.

Standard: two 2" layers.  You may find this helpful...
