Hi everyone,

Still off on break. I don't have a client cake till the 12th so I've plenty of time on my hands. This week I made Strawberry Shortcakes with lemon cake, fresh strawberries and freshly whipped cream. It was a hit with our little dinner party crowd. I'm doing mini cakes for my blog and wanted to show what you can do with small rounds of cake. My family is ever so happy to eat the fruits of my labor! LOL!  Anyways, here's the photo I took:

And, yes, it was totally yummy! LOL!

Hope to see lots of photos this week! I'm having a bit of cake withdrawl since I'm not really working right now. After such a busy summer it's hard to just suddenly have nothing going on!

YUM Cat.

I made a sandwich this week with help from AZ.  It was hubbies birthday and he is a salad sandwich freak. They would probably be his favorite thing in the world to eat.  It was probably the quickest and easiest cake I have ever made but looks great anyway.  He laughed and said he hadn't thought I was making him a cake.  When I replied that I had told him I was, he said that I usually puddle all week when I make a cake and as I hadn't done anything he presumed that I couldn't be bothered.  He took it back to work after lunch and said they all took photos of it and then sms d them to friends, claiming that they had made it!  I should add in here that most of them probably could not even cook a cake.

Sandwich cake for a salad sandwich addict's birthday.

The 'Rye' bread banana cake was from Rose Levy Berambaum's Cake Bible, with about a cup of chopped walnuts added and was absolutely delicious.

Hello everyone. I might share a pick of my cake disaster but I did a red velvet cake this week for a barbie cake. I posted more about it in the cake disaster forum.

That looks totally AWESOME! I love how the bread looks like real bread! Seriously a great illusion! I simply adore cakes that don't look like they could be cake! LOL!

AHi all! I didn't work this week... Had an Aunt who lived out of town who passed this week. She's in a better place. But I just wanted to share a cake I'm really proud of. I am new to fondant. Literally I've been working with it only a month. It's a pearl themed cake for a girl named Sophia

Well nothing as good as the ones above! But did this for my sister in laws birthday. Brief was giant cupcake with white and pink flowers and white and pink butterflies with glitter... I didn't mix the flower colours as I didn't think it'd look as nice (this is the bonus of doing free cakes... Certain amount of free reign!). Caused me a lot of stress. The last time I did a cupcake the roses fell off so I tried another buttercream recipe which ended up way drier than the last one so kept adding milk until it was right. Woke up this morning to no fallen roses so I'm happy now! My letters are jaggedy, can't get them right! And would like to get more grooves on the base but otherwise pleased considering the stress it was!

Love all of the cakes I woke up to this morning!

Morgan, love the cake...do you use a mold for the pearls or are those all handrolled? I love that it's not all one color too! So sorry to hear about your Aunt. Sometimes just being with family to say goodbye and talk about the person's life is a blessing in itself, sad, but a blessing.

Miss, the pumpkin cake sounds SO yummy. I'm a pumpkin freak (November is known as Pumpkin Month in our house) so that one sounds like it's right up my alley!LOL!

Reen, wow, birthday cake AND shower cake for the same cousin? She's one spoiled girl! LOL! The diaper bag looks just wonderful.

Ana, I think your rose and butterfly cake is just wonderful. I know that photography hides what you see in person but it looks fairly perfect to me. But I also know that we are SO hard on ourselves seeing every little imperfection and wanting it to be perfect. Rest assured that, to the rest of us, it does look perfect!

AOh, they are done with a mold lol! I was a bit pressed for time so as I picked some up they stretched a bit but the client didn't even notice. So it was a win all around

Paperfishes, the piping work looks nice, what are you trying to accomplish?

How big is the sandwich cake? Morgan I love those colors together. I love strawberries and whipped cream but dislike shortcake. Lemon cake however sounds tres' delicioso! I made my granddaughters cake this week. The night before my daughter calls and asks for a decoration change. It was still very simple. She made paper silhouettes from Peter Pan so she asked for a night sky. It was a vanilla cake with a blackberry compote and mascarpone cream filling. Unfortunately it was still cold when served and I think Swiss meringue and my cake tasted 100% better at room temp. I did not like it. But my kid did (the granddaughter just took her candle and scooped all of the bottom piping off of the cake and licked it off...LOL)

Paperfishes, you did an excellent job! If you keep practicing you will get better. My piping is still little to be desired but I've made great strides since trying 2 years ago.

This week as been less about cake and more about putting out fires. I've been through supplier hell this week. One supplier completely forgot to load my shipment on the truck and they only come once a month. This left me high and dry as I had to buy 3 cases of vegan powdered sugar from the grocery store, cutting a sharp knife into my profits. I buy my rice milk from Costco and out of the blue they discontinued it. There really is no replacement for that, I've been to every store I can think of looking for another brand that doesn't have gums in it and finally found some this afternoon after a week of looking. Now I have to decided if I am going to reformulate all my recipes to work with a more affordable rice milk.  My grains supplier was completely out of the pastry flour I can use, they sent a substitute for free, but what they sent me is cross-contaminated with nuts. The last one was completely my own fault, I ordered the wrong flour 50 lbs of it. Grrrrhhh! Thank God it was light cake week, I'm completely exhausted from searching for product, getting bounced around by customer service people. I know if I was a larger business they would pay closer attention to me. I feel helpless with little bargaining power. My ingredients are so specific because of the allergy requirements I don't have much of a choice on where I shop. This week really make me think hard about my business model and whether it is sustainable and contingency plans for ingredient shortages for basic things. Vent over, time for a glass of wine!

Okay so speaking of piping, I was in the mood today with this Princess Tiana cake. I need more practice, my drop strings need plenty of work!

Great cakes everyone.  Batter up the sandwich was the size of the large slices of bread that we can get in Australia.

Here's my Friday night cake! Made this for my husbands birthday. He's a huge Steelers fan, so I had to make him something he'd love, and he did! :) The bottom tier is supposed to resemble steel and rivets.

Who would have thunk that a truck cake would be so difficult? I got up at 4 am to start decorating. Never used ganache under fondant before and I mixed it too soft.  I had so many problems...ended up with 2 holes in the fondant because I tried putting headlights in places where I thought they would look good but didn't. Gonna tell the customer it was in a drive by shooting...lol. When I picture these in my head they are so simple and perfect and then they come out looking amateurish. I wish I would get more orders for children's cakes. They are so much more fun. I know my customer and I know she will think it's the greatest thing ever but they never live up to my expectations. Anyhow I worked on it straight up until school this evening and still didn't finish. I badly underestimated the time...i.e.... cost on this one. Here it is so far...

How much fun is it to come back in here and see all of these great cakes!!! I'm making cupcakes this week, not cake, and chocolate wine truffles for a client to give to her clients. Not exciting but it brings in some bucks which is always good! See you guys Friday night!
