So I realized that I forgot to cut holes in my styrofoam to stack my topsy turvy cake.  I am using the wedges method.  I have to deliver the cake tonight and I am unsure on how I should stack it now!! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you so much in advance.

set it up now in advance to test it out--

i'm not exactly positive what you mean because this resolution seems so obvious --but if you do set up in advance--well mark all your wedges as to front & back, left side, right side etc because the angles and the set up is so much different than you might think--

--also-- just poke holes in them now-- why not i wonder--

topsy turvy cakes as you are discovering are not at all about leaving this vital engineering for the last minute--you need to test this out asap so you have a little time to reconfigure if need be.

good luck

I didn't leave it to last minute, I did have everything planned out.  Maybe my explanation was not so clear, let me restate it.  Everything was fine and my cakes are on styrofoam boards.  My plan was to slide the cakes through the center support system.  As I inspected my cakes again, I noticed that I did not punch the hole in the bottom of the styrofoam so it would slide through.  If I do it now the styrofoam will be inside the cake!  :*(

oh i think i see what you mean--this is where the miscommunication comes from--when i do a topsy turvy with wedges i use small styrofoam wedges to place between the tiers to create the imbalances--these have to have specific holes in them drilled in at the right angle so the different sizes and angles of the cakes thread correctly--and surprisingly the holes in these wedges are not dead center--so that's what i meant by doing the engineering first--

now as to putting holes in the foam that will not push up into the cake? i'm assuming you mean foamcore cake boards? because putting cake directly onto foam would make it hard to serve --it could flake off into the cake slices and is not be sanitary--

i don't post often these days and i'm sure i've misunderstood what you mean--so sorry--

but if you mean you wanna cut a hole in a board that already has a cake on it--carefully slide the cake off the edge of the table but still keep the other side balanced on the table top--stick a pointy thing in there wherever you want the hole--a pointy thing like and ice pick or the other end of a quick read thermometer or an exacto knife--when you put the cake onto the dowel it will find the weakness, the hole in the board and slide right on--

not that you did here--i don't know--but don't put cakes on foam--

over and out ;)
