I want to make a rainbow cake for my daughter's 4th birthday. She asked for a cake with flowers, butterflies and rainbows and I don't think she realises that you can actually make rainbow coloured cake layers, so it's going to be a big surprise when we cut into the cake.
I've found lots of beautiful cakes for inspiration online, but am a bit overwhelmed with the possibilities.
I was thinking of covering the cake in sky blue buttercream then creating fondant grass and flowers up the side and a fondant stand-up rainbow on the top.
A mix of this http://www.flickr.com/photos/kbaby02/3586338601/ but with just one layer and this http://www.flickr.com/photos/darcys_cupcake_creations/6821063218/ but without the figure.
But I also love this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/neviepiecakes/5623462361/ and this http://cakesdecor.com/cakes/22553 and lots of others.
How do you decide what to do when faced with so many lovely ideas? I don't want to throw everything at the cake and come up with a monstrosity.
Any words of advice?
