I'm making a basket weave design on a round cake for a friend, this is the first time I'm doing this so I'm wondering if I need to cover the cake in fondant first? It is already ganached and although there won't be any 'holes' (hopefully) I can't decide if I need fondant or not - I think not but would love confirmation if any of you know. Thanks

Hi Claire, if the ganache and your basketweave icing are the same colour, then there's no need to cover it in fondant also. If they're different colours.....I'm afraid I'd feel more comfortable have a layer of fondant first, but then my basketweave piping wouldn't be great, so I'd need all the help I could get! Any other opinions out there????

No, no fondant under the basketweave--too much, too heavy.

If the ganache isn't the same color as the basketweave, then a skim coat of the basketweave icing over the ganache would be a good idea.  That will disguise any spaces in the weave.

Thanks, that's a great idea.
