ASo I'm very excited! It's ridiculously expensive to.get piping gel where I live. I may have found a cheap alternative. It's little sachets of clear gel for covering fruit.tarts. I'm wondering if I can use it as piping gel?

the ingredients are... starch, gelificant, some kind of seaweed gelatin, acid, cream of tartar...am translating the ingrediemts from spanish.

I never used piping gel, but does this sound about right for commercially bought piping gel?

Okay, so I got impatient and made it anyway and practiced on a mat and fondant... on the mat, it looks like I imagine piping gel could- colours well and kept shape, good for piping writing. On fondant? Disaster... it was tinted, and after a while it sort of developed a watery outside - you could clearly see the letters in blue, but then just a watery kind of overlay on the top.

Would regular piping gel do this too?

I made a pond and put some store-bought goldfish into it and the colours from the fish kind of leaked into the gel as well.

Having never used piping gel, I don't know if this would happen if it were the real thing. Thoughts anyone?
