You're not going to get the answer you're looking for because nobody knows what your costs are, how long you'll spend on the cake or what the market is like in your area. You will need to search for the many, many threads on this forum about pricing and work it out yourself.

Agee with approx. $4.50-$5.00/serving. 6"x8", 36 servings, $160.00ish

AAssuming the customer provided written permission from the copyright owners we would have charged in the $5-7/serving range, depending on the complexity of the characters and the size of the cake (a smaller cake would reduce ingredient costs but labor costs would not scale down linearly due to the design, so the price per serving would go up).

AZCouture- I am not sure still how I am going to do this. First off its family of mine so I don't want to charge to much but to be honest I am really new in this type of thing so its going to take me a lot of time to be able to get all the characters right. This is one I need to sit on for a bit and really make sure I can pull off. I am not a professional and I am self taught. 

ASomeone shouldn't be paying extra for your inexperience. The extra time it will take you shouldn't factor into it. Also, if you're new, the skill level will probably will probably lower than those who listed what they would charge, so you should be charging less if that's the case.

AHow can you possibly say that someone should not charge extra for their inexperience, experience. Comes through practice basically, if she hasn't got proper training but can pull the job properly, she can charge what she deems fit. However like someone earlier mentioned, put your time and hardwork, plus what you spent on the cake generally into consideration and then consider a fair price since its family

Someone should be paying for the quality of the finished product, not the amount of time it took - otherwise, newbies would be charging more than experienced decorators.

I stated what *I* would charge. If OP hasn't been decorating as long, and doesn't have the skill, she should not be charging the same rate as I do.

People with more experience will work faster thus upping their hourly wage but they should certainly charge more if the end result is a higher quality cake in ether taste or looks.

Market value can have more of an impact than product quality when comparing prices in different areas. If cost of living is higher in a particular market it's entirely possible that a lower quality product will end up being priced higher than a higher quality product in a cheaper area, and rightfully so. That's one reason why it's not very useful to get price estimates from people who don't serve your specific market.

I agree to the fact that they should not have to pay extra just because I take 15 hours on a cake verses a professional spending 10. However if mine comes out looking just as good or better. Then I would charge the same as the professional whatever that maybe. I have done a few cakes in which the person has come to me with a picture of what they want and mine ended up looking a lot better than the pic because I spent the extra time to get things right. I may not be a professional but I am very picky about what my cakes end up looking like. 

I do appreciate and value all of your opinions seeing as you all have probably been doing it a lot longer than myself. Thank you all for your help. 

AWhat you should charge and what your family are willing to pay are likely very different. Work out your costs and estimated time before agreeing an amount and definitely before spending any money on it.

You may even want to get an estimated budget before costing it out, if their budget is $50 for 50 people it's not even worth looking at unless you want to provide the cake as a gift.
