Newbie needing help

I have been asked by a friend to make her little girls 7th birthday cake.  I got the cake itself totally under control.  The problem(s) I have are 1: She wants a homemade whippy frosting like the Betty Crocker in the little tubs and I have NO CLUE how to make it!  I always stick to my homemade cream cheese icing that everyone loves.  That brings me to my second problem. 2: Can I put two icings on the cake?  The cake is a rainbow with a cloud attached on each side.  I was thinking the rainbow could have one and the clouds could have the other.

Why couldn't you use both types of frosting? I say go for it, and people can choose between the two. I'm not sure what you mean by "home made whippy frosting." Possibly an American buttercream? This one is simple and good. Adjust the amount of liquid to a desired spreading consistency, and you'll be good to go. I usually add a pinch of salt, too.

I know the icing you speak of but am yet to find a recipe for it EXCEPT in a class I took, the instructor (a pastry chef) made the most creamy whipped-like buttercream I've ever had. She did not want to share her recipe but did say it had cups of liquid and stayed on the mixer for 45 minutes. Trust me, I did all but beg for the recipe. If you find one, please share.

Wow, 45 minutes in the mixer?? Don't you just love those people who will not share recipes?

The only thing I can think of that starts out liquid and has to be whipped for hours is the bettercreme stuff, or Pastry Pride etc. Those are no more homemade than Betty Crocker.

Well I looked back and the icing is a DreamWhip icing.  I'm still not sure how it's going to taste.  I am going to try a batch tonight to see and if all else fails, I will put some kind of flavoring in it that we like and use it here!  lol

This may sound silly, but why not just use what she like - The "  whippy Betty Crocker frosting in the little tub".  Your talent in baking and decorating will shine through, and the frosting will be "spot on" with what she likes.  No need to divulge your recipe.
