Multiple themes, one tier

Hi all - this is the first time I've posted a question.  I have a lady who has asked me to make a cake for her mother's 80th birthday.  It is only to be a small cake, but she would like it customized to reflect her mother's interests.  The mother worked for an airline, loves to travel, was a nurse, loves to play bridge, she sent a flag from her homeland, and the flower of the province in Canada where she lives.

Any suggestions how I can bring all of this together on an 8" cake?

Thanks!

Julie

If it were me decorating this cake, I would make it into a hatbox type look and make each interest into a stamp or something. I have done multi theme but never on such a small cake. Good luck.

Funny, I was thinking something like photographs of each thing she was thinking...
You're right, a bigger cake would have been much easier to work with! Sigh!!! Thanks for your feedback!

How much work does her budget allow for? You don't want to design a cake that requires 20 hours of work if you're only being paid for 5.

So true and great point!! I will not be putting that much time into it. At this point, though, I sure wish I had an edible image printer! Lol!!

Round? Square? You could put some of the "themes" on the side

Yes, I definitely intend to put the themes on the sides (it's a round cake...is that considered to have sides? Lol!)

Yes absolutely a side! Lol
Are you thinking of piping designs on, using fondant, or do you have access to an edible printer

I don't have access to a printer, unfortunately, but thought to "paint" images possibly, on a post-card or stamp-size piece of gumpaste. I like CakesbyKadi's idea of a hatbox!

Love the hatbox idea!!!!

I've done a couple of multiple theme one tier cakes (one was just toppers, actually).  I did a sculpted figure of the individual, then surrounded with 3D and 2D sculpted things the individual loved and edible images of his family.  By the way, check with your local bakery grocery store.  Many will charge about $5-7 to print just an edible image for you.  I printed out pictures of the customer's family and just brought them in to the grocery store.

Thanks for the tip! I will check around to see if any of them can/will do that here! The money is not enough for me to get into sculpting! I am not proficient at it, so it would take me WAY too long. Do you have a pic of the cake you made?? I would live to see it! 😊
