ASo I just had my friend pick up her order. She wanted a small luau themed 2 tiered cake with 75 matching cupcakes. It was my first order with cupcakes and I'm pretty proud of them! I experimented with a few cupcake recipes beforehand so I'm happy with the way they tasted. 25 of them are vanilla, 25 chocolate and 25 are strawberry. I made the little toppers from gum paste. The top tier of the cake is vanilla and bottom is chocolate. I'm happy how everything turned out but I want y'all's honest opinions! And about how much would you have charged? Thanks for your input! Wow ! They look awesome! Congrats!!! You did a great job! By chance, can you your strawberry cupcake recipe? I been experimenting with a few, but they all seem to not taste so good. Thank you!
Welcome to the forum! To answer your question, I would have charged nothing because I do not charge my friends. I do charge acquaintances, but my costs and pricing structure are different from yours, so my $ amount would not help you.
This topic has been discussed extensively. Use the search box and type in "how to price cakes" or "jason_kraft pricing cakes" and learn for yourself how to do the math. Knowing how to price all your products is far better than returning each time to ask how much.
Also make sure you are compliant with food safety laws in your area, some states require a license and/or an inspection before you can sell food to the public.
AFirst of all the cake and cupcakes look awesome great job!! now for me and my pricing my small two teirs are 80... that is 8 inch round bottom and 6 in top... your cake actually looks bigger than that... and I charge about 1.60 ea. For cupcakes. I am NOT a professional and I do bake out of my home and so far those are the prices that work for me in my area. they are not comparable to bakeries, I know they charge way more, but its the price I'm comfortable accepting for the work that I do at this time and I've been baking for a year and a half. I do charge friends but I do charge less and usually by word of mouth they send someone my way and they place an even bigger order!! hope this helps!
Your cakes and cupcakes are so cute! First, you should figure out exactly how much it cost you to make the cakes and cupcakes. Everything from the cost of ingredients down to the packaging and delivery. Then factor in how much you'd like to pay yourself by the hour for your work. When I first started baking, I was only charging $1.50 each for decorated cupcakes (EVERYTHING made from scratch!). Then I did the math and found that I was only profiting about 50 cents per cupcake and paying myself less than $1 per hour. People in sweat factories make more than that! No matter whether you're baking from your home or in a commercial kitchen, be sure to not under price your items. Even if you're working from home, you must consider utility cost when baking. After hours of long work, you'll be upset with yourself for not paying yourself. You will always have customers tell you that they don' want to pay much for a cake. I always refer those customers to places like Walmart :-) I'd much rather not get their order at all than to cheat myself. Once word gets out that you're cheap, everyone will contact you and you'll be working for mere pennies. I've seen many post on here stating that "people in my area just won't pay that much", well, if they want good stuff, they'll pay for it. but if you buckle, they will take advantage of you. Your work is great! Know that, embrace that and charge what you're worth! If this is something that you plan to do for sure, I would recommend purchasing the Cake boss program that's advertised on this website. It's a really great program!
Oh, I forgot to answer you main question.....
I charge $3.50 per serving for buttercream cakes, $4.50 per serving for fondant cakes and $2.50 to $4 per cupcake depending on the extent of decoration. Also, for homemade fruit and fudge fillings, it's 75 cents extra per serving.
I charge $2.75 per cupcake, but I make them jumbo (1T more batter per cupcake in special cups)
For my friends, I charge mostly for ingredients.

You did a great job!
If I made that, and it wasn't for a friend, I would have charged $3.25 per cupcake due to the gumpaste decorations. I would have charged $4 per slice for the cake. The tiki dude didn't seem like it was super hard and took a ton of fondant or gumpaste. If the design had been more intricate, I would have added a charge for that...up to $25 per tier.
I'm in Virginia and that is the going rate around here. One of the big home-based bakers charges a little less because she deals in really high volume and has a staff of more than just herself. She also caters. Another one of the big named home baker businesses charges what I do.
Keep making cakes! You have a lot of talent!
ABloody amazing! Well done on your first order! ! Whoop whoop! After the price of ingredients, work out how long making the toppers, mixing, baking, washing up and decorating took. Then think about what your hourly rate should be, what your time is worth, you should then have your price for the cakes x
Ait looks really nice! i dont know how to make a cup cake. butter cream or chocolate on it? your cakes make me mouth water. go ahead~
AYou did a fantastic job!!!!
For the cupcakes I would have charged $36 per dozen.
For the cake, I would charge $4.50 per serving.
