I have a birthday for a friend coming up in November, and im looking for a cake that's got a unique taste to it.Hes not a fan of chocolate but not opposed to it. So if I could stay away from chocolate that would be great.

For some reason raspberry is stuck in my head, so maybe something with that. Ive also heard of a pink lemonade/marmalade cake? anyone have any interesting or unique recopies they'd like to share?

Thanks for the help :)

November is a great time for cakes.  I love fall flavors.

You have:

Pumpkin spice

Apple spice (could use a caramel filling)

Pear

Browned butter pecan

Caramel

Buttermilk spice

Praline filling would go well with any of these flavors.  You can make it yourself and grind it (which I've done) or buy a commercial paste (much smoother).  Just mix the praline into your buttercream.  I highly recommend using a meringue buttercream like Italian meringue buttercream or Swiss meringue buttercream if you're going to use the praline paste.  Mixing it into a powdered sugar based icing would make it way too cloying.  The flavors I listed above also go very well with cream cheese filling or icing.

Raspberry is great paired with lemon.  There are lots of great raspberry filling recipes.  For fall I'm more inclined to go with one of the flavors listed above because it's more seasonal.  Lemon and raspberry scream spring/summer to me.  But of course you can do it however you want.

Good luck!

Around this time of year my family likes my vanilla cinnamon cake with apple butter filling.  I use vanilla IMBC to frost it and generously drizzle it with caramel.

I'm not a fan of cinnamon though, so I would go with pumpkin cake with white chocolate IMBC.

Fall flaovrs do sound quite festive. and it would go well with the theme of his cake too, which is going to be a Buffy the Vampire Slayer cake. So goes well with the whole Halloween season and all.

Im pretty drawn to your suggestion of the apple spice.

Do you have any or know of any recipes for this?

AI just made a fabulous apple cake called John's 3-layer apple cake. It had brown sugar meringue buttercream . I think the recipe is on Martha Stewart's site. I did basket- weave on the sides and made fondant apple tops with leaves and stems so it looked like a basket of apples.

AHey guys sorry I didn't check in sooner.

For the apple or pear spice, use shredded apples or chopped pears in your favorite carrot cake recipe. I have a good apple spice recipe that I used for my girlfriend's wedding cake. PM me and I can dig up.
