I am making a cake for my parents 50th anniversary this week, and I'm not thrilled with the design my mom wants, but it's her cake.  The design is somewhat dated and not the usual white & gold color scheme you would expect for a 50th Anniversary.

It will be a small, 3-tier stacked cake, buttercream icing.  She wants it decorated with sprays of blue forget-me-knots on each tier & on top (I piped them in royal).  For the sides, she wants a heart design I did on a Valentine's Day wedding cake 12 years ago (imprint hearts around with a cookie cutter, then go over with scrollwork & a little overpiping).

I am trying to figure a way to incorporate some gold into this design and I'm just drawing a blank.  She didn't give me much notice and really thru me with the blue flowers and the design; not what I was expecting at all.  Any suggestions?

Thanks, I did forget to mention I was planning on doing that.  I feel like it needs a little gold somewhere else on the cake, too, but I'm afraid too much might be gaudy with the blue flowers??  It will be on a gold coved cake drum, too.

ACan you carefully paint the piped hearts gold? It sounds lovely!

AMaybe not the entire heart, just the overpiping?

I think blue and gold is lovely together, I would go with the suggestion of painting the hearts gold. Maybe you could do a bit of gold edging on some of the flowers or leaves?

What if you did the top and bottom tiers like your mom wants and do the center tier with gold scroll work?

Hi Jen, what do you think of the metallic gold trend in cakes at the moment? I agree with one of the previous posters that the blue flowers with gold would be beautiful - would you consider spraying the cake in edible gold paint and then piping on your blue flowers? I have also made a gold plaque. I airbrushed it gold. I then wrote with r/i the date of marriage thru 50 yrs. also the large gold 50, the blue flowers will be pretty with little gold added. good luck i know it will be pretty.
