AThis is my first gumpaste flower and it was hard!!! I would really like your suggestions on how I could improve- I know I need a lot of practice but your comments will help a great deal
Keep up the practicing. I haven't ventured into gumpaste yet, so Good for You.
Made tiny roses out of Satin Ice fondant:
made big roses out of homemade modeling chocolate:
but the realism & beauty of gumpaste flowers is still a skill I have yet to attempt:
I just sent for a video from a website called 'International Sugar Art Collection' by Nicholas Lodge. A video is a good way for me to get an idea of how they make those awesome real life looking flowers & sprays for professional cakes.
Also sent for a book called 'Sugar Roses for Cakes' by Tombi Beck.......hope all this professional instruction will set me on a good path to success.
AAwww thanks guys!! I will definitely keep practising and I'm glad you all recognised it was atleast a rose!! :D @ norasmom, yep you're right my bottom petals definitely need work!!! MBalaska isn't fondant harder to work with than gumpaste? I've yet to try fondant but yours look really good!

cakealicious7: your rose is inspirational. nicely formed petals.
I look forward to the pros offering suggestions so that I may learn also.
You did a really great job!
As you practice, the rose will get easier and easier. As suggested, watch your overlap and cone tip. The petal curve is really good. The best thing I can tell you is now that you have the basics, start practicing making the petals thinner. You will be amazed at how that will take it to the next level.
My personal preference for roses is Alan Dunn's method.
AThankyou so much for your suggestions,so you can roll the petals thinner?! Gonna have to check out the Alan Dunn method.
I've been making roses for a few years now, so I worked my way to at least 7 and sometimes 8 on the pasta machine. When I hold up a single petal, I look to see how much light is coming through.
This is the book I used:

I still refer back to it :)

JWinslow: looking at your flowers in the cake competition photo, you are an expert. They are great. Love the tulips. Thanks for the tip on the Alan Dunn Book.
You really did a wonderful job. My first ones looked nothing like that. I usually use a mix of gumpaste & fondant. Gives me a little more time to get the petals the way I want them. Not sure if this is something you want to try but the last couple of roses I have done have been without cutters. I find that I am able to get a very thin petal this way giving them a more realistic look. Also have let the inner petals dry. Dusting them with petal dust also helps with making them look real. If you are interested in trying the no cutter method, I used this tutorial http://cakesdecor.com/LMCakeDesign/blog/466
OP: I think they look fantastic!
Here is my most recent attempt at fondant roses. I think I tried it once before but used only 1 step up from the very simple rolled roses. I tried to follow a method similar to one you would use with gumpaste for this for the first time, and it was stinking hard. Next time I`ll definitely use gumpaste instead...the fondant was really floppy and still too thick, and it started to tear in some spots.

Well thank you, but I am by NO means an expert. I have picked up a ton of tips over the years from CC members and other artists. A perfect example is Goreti's post. Just look at those gorgeous roses!
Try different techniques/methods until you find what gives you the most realistic look.
Thanks Goreti for the tutorial link - I will be giving it a try :)

Jeanne, your flowers are really awesome. I drool every time you post some. Thank you for the compliment on my roses. I have found that for me that is what works best. You are right there are so many different techniques and it's all a matter of finding what works best for you.
Cakealicious, you are off to a great start. You definitely have the knack for sugar flowers. Just keep practicing. The best advice I can give you is be patient which is something I still struggle with. Sometimes I try to rush things along because I want to see the end result. Not always a good thing. Can't wait to see more from you.
Those are so gorgeous Goreti. I can only hope to make something that beautiful one day. Lots and lots of practice in my future!

Your flowers are really good! It was really hard to do them but a lot of fun, would love to see how your gumpaste roses turn out :-)

Thankyou for your advice, I will be checking out the tutorial. So I followed Jeanne's advice and tried to roll the petals thinner, and also yours by dusting with silver petal dust and this is how it turned out
And do you see your own improvement? Even though the picture is blurry, I see a tighter cone, better overlapping, and overall a more delicate looking flower. I am curious as to what you think of your own work. I see you changed your avatar
Jeanne
AI loved the advice you guys gave that's why I went to practice straight away, without your help I don't think I would have achieved a better flower. I know I have a long way off to make those realistic flowers, but I do like this one and I feel so privileged to have professionals like you guide me :)
That's wonderful! So, I cannot not tell from the pic, but are you veining your roses at this stage?
ANo im not veining them yet, just trying to master the basics yet lol! Btw you are soooo beautiful!! Just saw everybody's pics on the other thread WOW!!
