Hi when i see mad science I think of green filled bottles and bubbles.

You could make a normal rectangular cake, try making out of fondant viles or glass looking bottles. Color them to look like liquid then place like white or light colored cotton candy to look like smoke coming out of them!

For the rest of the scenery you can place rulers, notepads with crazy calculations, atoms or lab gloves.

Hope this helps get the creativity flowing

I think of green, bubbling over beakers as well!

Maybe top with a beaker of green 'sciency goo', (I skipped a lot of my science classes, can you tell?), and green gelatin bubbles overflowing from it and down the side of the cake.

AOk I think you should make the cake look like a mini lab. With maybe some baking elements, but maybe not. You can set up a real science experiment. Two beakers, with some grape juice inside.. then some kindof edible container filled with lemon juice and one filled with baking soda. (Can you pop gelatin bubbles? Maybe that would work with the lemon juice). When you add the lemon juice to one grape juice it will turn red, and when you add the baking soda to the other grape juice it will turn green! Anyways, its an idea I guess.

I recently made this one.  It was inspired by a Canadian bakery, Cassiopee Designs.

Test tube on top, beakers have dry ice and colored water.
