I have had an increasing demand for cookies with "no artificial colors" and specifically, no FD&C colors. Does anyone have experience or resources for natural food dye? A bit of digging on Google did not turn up much that would apply to tinting icing.
Any advice/experience appreciated!
ANatural food dye (like India Tree) is significantly more expensive than FD&C dyes. The natural dyes work well for pastels but not so well for highly saturated colors.
Thanks, Jason. I appreciate even having a brand name to look for.
By pastels, do you mean that India Tree sells pastel coloring that works well, or just that when you try for red with their coloring you will probably get pink, pale green instead of grass green, etc.?
Are the resultant colors pretty stable? Do they shift when dry or exposed to light?
Many thanks for any information you might be able to share!
PME have brought out a range of natural food colours, but I'm not sure you can get them in the US yet. Could be worth a quick Google, they come in lots of colours.
