AJust wondering if anyone can help suggest what I might be able to use as a mold for a Mickey hat cake topper? I have black gum paste & am ready to go but need a good shape for the hat & ears. Some type of dome. And maybe if you have made a Mickey/Minnie Hat as a cake topper - could you talk me thru how you connected the ears & fondant bow :-):smile:successfully ? I really want this cake to look great so the simplicity is the key. I have the rest of the cake planned in fondant. There are quite a few cakes with these little Mickey Mouse club hats as cake toppers in the Disney Theme section of galleries. I'm counting on some-one to be able to give me some advice. Thanks:grin:

Have you considered making the hat out of cake?  I used the half ball pan and covered in fondant.  Easy Peasy.  Then I picked the circle cutter I wanted for the ears and cut out fondant ears and let dry.

I haven't done a Micky cake but if you don't have the ball pan I would use a bowl/cup depending on the size.  I do this a lot to help me shape RKT before covering with fondant.  I also use melted chocolate to glue things.  Sets up really fast.  If not you could use royal icing but you want something that matches (black for the ears).  Good luck!

AHi, I had thought about a cake hat but this cake is for my first grandchilds 1st Birthday & my daughter is being oober fussy about the whole thing. She just wants the hat & Ears as a topper hence my buying black gumpaste. I think I will have to use one of my smallish bowls as the mold & try to get it to look as close to a dome as possible. If only she were happy with cake. I've done dome cakes (in a larger than suitable size for this project) before. Oh well, I'll just have to hold my nose & jump. I hope I land on my feet. Thanks Ladies.

AJust put the bowl upside down with cornstarch or ps and form your head over that.

AWell the cake topper is done. I did it 24 hours ago & it's still playable. Last time I worked with gumpaste it was setting in my hands as I worked. Anyway it will set I am hoping. My problem now is colour. The jet black gumpaste I ordered actually appears to be a very dark shade of grey. Do you think I should give it a lick of paint with black food coloring? Any ideas about this anyone?

AHi seamusis20, I hope I'm not too late but I just made one a few days ago. This is what I did- I cut a styrofoam ball in half. I rolled out black fondant mixed with a little tylose and covered the dome and smoothed it out. I then cut a cake board the same size and used royal icing to attach it to the bottom of the dome so it can sit smoothly on the cake. For the ears, I rolled the fondant a little thicker and used a circle cutter. Then I put water on toothpicks and inserted ( very carefully! ) them into the circles. I let them dry for 2 days and they are perfect! It's great because the foam isn't heavy and really doesn't put much weight on your cake. I hope I helped.

AThanks Carabella, I put mine over a little stainless Steele bowl that is a good dome. Your idea of using a styro-ball is a good one especially for holding the ears. I'll keep that in mind for next time Thanks for sharing :)

RE: "grey" gum paste.  I'm sure I'm to late but for another option in the future you can use a spray color like color mist.  You can get them at Michaels, Hobby Lobby or many places on line.  I also find black fondant with Tylose added to it (turning it into gum paste) holds the black color better.

also,  that old trick of adding some cocoa powder really works well too!
