Making hard cupcake toppers

Hello all,

I am still a novice of sorts when it comes t gumpaste and fondant. I want to make circular cupcake toppers that will be hard. I have made them in the past by mixing gumpaste and fondant, but I was reading about mixing fondant with tylose powder. Would that mixture give me the same results as mixing gumpaste and fondant together?

Also what would be the best way to apply color through the stencil with luster dust? just brush over the stencil dry or mix the dust with alcohol?

I use regular fondant and just make them several days ahead of time to make sure they dry hard. The stencil actually looks airbrushed to me...

I do it 3-5 days in advance and leave it to air dry... you'd want it hard but still chewy. if you use gumpaste it'll be too hard to eat.

Great...thanks everyone! Also would you all have an opinion on how to apply the luster dust through the stencil.

Rub some shortening on the fondant with your finger, place the stencil on top and brush your dust. Remove stencil.

Yes, the picture isn't luster dust though.
