 So I have started a cake business and I am looking for new customers. I have came across a site that list events and other sort of things. Do you think it is a good idea to reach out to the organizer of a certain event and offer my services to them, by making a cake. Or is that just not a good idea?

For sure, Cupncake35, and well done on your new business! It's definitely worthwhile doing some cakes for charity events for instance and asking that they promote your business in return. You'll find that the organizers will really put effort in to spreading the word about your business in appreciation of your support. That has been my experience when I started out.  Make sure you have business cards or flyers to give them also. Good luck!

AWho is your target market, and what is your competitive advantage? What kind of events are we talking about here? Talking to venues directly might be more productive than approaching the organizers of each event individually.

 I am going to specialize  in birthday parties, baby showers, anniversary’s, bachelor and bachelorette parties, company events(going a ways, showers, birthdays). Once I feel as though I can move onto wedding cakes then I will begin moving towards that area while keeping my specialization in the areas I already mentioned. I will also include a dessert table setup further down the road. My cakes will be all fondant and my cupcakes will be frosting or fondant depending on what the customer wants. So my offerings for now are cakes and cupcakes. Later will be a dessert table, wedding cakes, cookies and cake pops.

A person on my FB page recently asked me to make up some dummy cakes and sell cupcakes at a high end toddler clothing swap meet....see if there is Mommy events like that in your area. Make sure it is something that higher income people attend though.

There are a bunch of children's spas in my area. I took in cupcakes to the workers of 1 (so far), left my cards and asked me to recommend me when a client is having their child's birthday party there.

It's just what it sounds like...a spa that provides services for kids (hair, nails, facials, massages, etc.). Many also offer party packages, but I don't think serving food at the spa is common.

They have the cutest tiny little chaise lounges. Seeing the little ones all laid out on there with cucumbers on their eyes... Soo freakin cute!

Thanks for the input. One of my plans is to target the local party places that have birthday parties. I am also thinking of a promotion of some sort for a business and for out local sports team. I haven't figured out exactly what kind for the business, but for the sports team. I plan on running it on instagram, facebook and the local sport shops if they allow me to. Trying to figure out the most cost effective is also the problem.

BatterUpCake, I like your idea, although there is only 1 childrens spa that I know of in the city.

Well then that is the one I'd hit up! lol Pretty much the same idea as the party places. They usually offer kid's party packages. It is not cheap so most likely your customers from there will not be cheap. You do not want cheap customers.

LOL...they had a Groupon last week and I took my granddaughter. She got a "facial" (they pretty much just washed her face and put lotion on) her nails done chalk highlights in her hair in 3 colors, A bit of makeup and a glitter tattoo. Then she got to make her own mixture of lotion and put different glitters and sparkly things init. Little girls always was to do what the big girls do. Tis is this decades version of playing dress up.

I offer cake decorating kits for kids birthday parties. The parents send me the number of guests and  I send a cupcake and icing in a sample bag with a variety of candies etc. so kids can decorate and take home or eat their own creation. It fills the gaps when I don't have a larger cake order for the week. Kids love it and moms too.
