I, too, want to speak up for sheet cakes. I feel that they are just a blank canvas waiting for the artist's brush! How apt, a plain rectangle that can take on so many dimensions according to the artist's skill. Round, square, stacked or flat sheets...they all have their  place in the lexicon of cakes.

Yea for the (not so) humble sheet cake!

WOW, carmijok:  that is the most awesome display of sheet cakes I've seen so far. Thanks for highlighting. I've purchased idea books on sheet cakes, cause people want them, they are handy to cut & serve, and they are like 'weeble' cakes -  weebles wobble but they don't fall down.

Do people really look down on them, or are they just another beautifuly delicious part of the cake world?

sometimes a luxury car, sometimes the family van, sometimes a dune buggy, ride a bike, or walk.  They will all get you where you're goin'.

I don't think it's so much that people look down on them, it's that some people hate decorating them, myself included.

I actually don't even offer them, I have seen some awesome ones, but my style of decorating just isn't 'sheet cake friendly'. They always turn out looking like poo.

(well not literally, but almost :P)

Quite often someone is ordering a sheet cake to cut down on costs as well, so that really limits what sort of decorating you can do.

But on the topic well executed ones, I really like this one. http://cakecentral.com/g/i/2243010/to-80th-birthday/

Yes, I've read quite a few times on here certain decorators who make a point to say they refuse to do sheet cakes like it was somehow beneath their abilities.  Perhaps they didn't mean it that way, but it always sounds like that.  I just think Corrie76 shows that you can elevate the humble sheet cake into a work of art!

Scrumdiddly cakes said it well.  I don't look down on them at all, I am just not adept at decorating them!  I find it far easier to decorate a 3-tier cake than a sheet cake  Also, they can be quite large and not fit in my oven.  I have seen some beauties on this website, though!

I am always in awe of her cakes and how perfect they are. Those shell borders are amazing. Now if only she would put out a dvd of how to make her creations, that would make my day.

Yes, all of her sheet cakes are beautiful. I will make a 3 tier cake anytime , if they are willing to pay for a 3 tier, but when a client wants a sheet cake, i decorate according to the price they want to pay for that. If they got the money , honey, i got the time and the talent!!! Many on c/c in the past have compared sheet cakes to walmart or any grocery store. I have never made one that i thought looked like a 25-30 walmart sheet cake. Keep sheet cakes alive. Sharon Zambito has a gread dvd on sheet cakes. She is one of the greatest decorators i have ever known.

Corrie76 is the best!

I use to be embrassed to admit I did sheet cake based on the vile reaction to them sometimes on the forum. But people like them because they are easy to cut and transport and it is what they are familiar with. Corrie inspired me to step up my game, because after all if you are going to be in the business you need to be well rounded. My shell borders still need a lot of work.

I will admit it is harder for me to do a sheet cake than a round or square. Something about the shorter sides makes it terribly hard to ice.  Corrie has been my favorite decorator since I joined cakecentral. I'm glad she's back to posting her pictures! Everytime I need an idea for a cake, I run over to her facebook page. I can't replicate her style--she's just that talented. I'd love to. Her cakes are like reading a storybook. A true genius and her cakes get better and better. Thanks for starting this thread.

I feel the same way. Why people have to assume that means it's beneath someone to make one is beyond me. I happen to love Corrie Cakes' work and chat with her every once in awhile on Facebook.

I don't do sheet cakes, not because they are beneath me, I just don't know what to do with all that space! Plus, everyone who wants one, expects it to be $20. No can do.

AThe only sheet cakes I've done that were for a job and not still in the pan have been ice cream cakes for work. I was proud of them, until I saw these magnificent ones lol.

I think people are just used to referring to slabs of simply decorated cake as "sheet cake".  Corrie's work is a whole different category.  I think she's just brilliant, wish I had half of her talent!

I love Corrie76's cake. Wow! what can i say? They're just all amazing sheet cake! Very clean details and looks really like you're watching a cartoon movie. Beautiful blending of colors and very delicate. I wonder why some of the cake displays are always round tier or square! There are only few who make and decorate sheet cake. And it's true that round cake are very easy to ice with compared to sheet cake. But most of the cake that i made was rectangle or sheet cake. Because most of the cakes i've seen are round or square, I tried searching for sheet cake if how many would exist and the first sheet cake that caught my eyes and attention was Corrie's sheet cake, the one with the happy penguins and buntings that tied up on trees! I was like, wow! heart_eyes.png I love it! So beautiful. Very clean/fine details and playful design, so I instantly clicked favorites and visited her gallery and so pleased with all of her cake creations specially the sheet cakes. blush.png

When I  decorate a sheet cake , I charge $55.00-60.00. It's one layer ,Torted, filled and decorated as how they want ! If it is 2 layers I charge more ! Never had a problem with the cost !!

Corrie Rasmussen, 'Corries Cakes' now has a tutorial on how to decorate those sheet cakes on Craftsy "The perfect birthday cake."

Sharon Zambito also has a dvd tutorial called "Sheet Cake Secrets".
