Decorate a Spiderman Cake - what to use for the Web???

Hello lovely Cake Peope...

Firstly - thank you for reading my question and hpefully thank you for your help!

I've been asked to do a Spiderman cake for my friend's son.  I agreed and then panicked (I'm not that experienced in caking yet) as I realised that Spiddy has a web all over this face!

So.... my question - what would you use to make the Web?

Should I use Royal Icing (that I've made black) - if yes, I'm a bit rubbish and not that confident with Royal Icing - I find it very hard to pipe.

I've watched a youtube video where someone 'painted' the web on - but I can't find out what they've used for the 'paint' - would it heave been Black Gel colour (I've got that) - but mixed with what?  Don't want to use alcohol if possible - any other ideas?

Any suggestions would be welcomed as I may explode over this cake!!!Thanks in advance

Gigggles

xx

Hi, If you want to paint it on I would use charcoal black petal dust and mix it with

alcohol or lemon juice....I use the alcohol (vodka) myself...I just like the way it mixes....

I just used black buttercream.  I did a head bust of him for my grandson last year. He loved it!

You can get edible ink pens - I think by Sugarflair, so you can draw them on

If you get a clay extruder, they usually come with a really fined holed plate. Extrude black fondant through this plate and you will have loads of strings. (mix it with a bit of tylo to make it a bit stronger) Then you can place your web strings over pete's mask. You have more room for error than piping as you essentially just move the bits about till you are happy with them, then just lightly press them into the red fondant or you can glue with edible glue. i find black fondant quite sticky once worked so you prob wont need glue. Extruders aren't that expensive and come with quite a few different plates that you will use or loads of stuff, I use mine loads. Hope this helps.

Hi
Iv done the Spider-Man head bust twice and used blackened royal icing to the web. I was terrified the first time but it looked okay. Make a nice thick royal icing, then using your writing nozzle pipe lines down from the nose to the bottom, go round the whole cake, they will be closer together at the top, then wider apart at the base. Once u done, starting at the nose, pipe little arcs connecting the vertical lines, once u done with the first line, leave a small space then pipe the second line of arcs, and continue till u done.
I was shaking on my first line, but on the second it was smooth sailing.
I hope this helps

If you can find it there is a recipe for rubbery royal icing - I haven't used it but I have seen it spoken about on here - if I was making the web that is what I would be trying first. Pipes like RI but easier to handle I believe.

I may not make perfect cakes but I gaurantee they all contain a super special ingredient .... lots and lots of love .
