Can I Apply Edible Image To Fondant Before Placing On Cake?

A friend wants the cake below...I am guessing that one was airbrushed. I would have to have the image printed and apply to fondant. I think (never used these images before) it would be easier to put on flat fondant then on the cake....but then I wonder about cracking and other disasters. I realize the skulls would stretch some... What would be the best way to do this...
That is a super cool cake. I would never put an image on first. It would not work. The process of getting a smooth outcome will ruin the images. Maybe you could print a bunch of those images up...place on the cake after you have put on the fondant...then add the airbursh as a touch up to blend/hide the edges? I would cover the cake in black fondant...then put on the images...then add the airbrush highlights. Good luck.
I don't do airbrushing (yet!) And it costs me 8 to get an image printed....I guess I could put as many single skulls as I can fit on and 8X11 then cut them out and overlap it is only going to be a 6" single tier...this is just the pic she sent....Thanks...I figured it wouldn't work to put the image on first but I was hoping someone would know of some super cool trick
AYou could add two image sheets at put the flowers along the seam which would run around the top circular edge
So add one circular image to the top after the fondant has been placed then add one wide strip all around the side
And then add something along the seam to hide it, like those black frangipanis
Some edible image paper is really thin and much better placed on white fondant. But then some is thicker and can be placed on any colour.
Well I got 16 skulls printed o an 8x11 sheet. I am only doing a 6" cake since it will be a small dinner. I am making a large black rose as the centerpiece and I am going to paint the edges of the petals with silver. I was thinking silver beads around teh bottom...not enough time to do too many flowers
well I am cutting out the little skulls and putting them all over. But you can see a definite edge for each one...I thought they would dissolve once they were wet but it looks like I stuck stickers on my cake! Still looks good from a couple of feet away but up close...uggghh. Ran out of skulls so I am waiting for the cake store to open.
Well when I delivered it I overheard from the bathroom "that is the best cake I ever tasted!" Thank you MacsMom!!!
yaaaay!
This is the method i was talking about, but use two images and pipe in between, but i thought you could add black roses rather than piping, of course the images on the top and sides won't line up with one another unless you can find a program than can make a cylindrical image, but if you have a border of black roses the two images will be rather separated so no one would probably notice.
well that would have probably been easier but i didnt really want to pipe a border at the top this time...thank you for the compliments!
AI think you did an awesome job! I did a really close up look on my iPad and think it looks really smooth. Great job! Where did you find your skulls....Google search?
yep....then I placed them on a word doc in a couple different sizes and had the cake store make the edible sheet. I put a glaze on it so the edges turned out to be less noticeable. Thank you. I appreciate your feedback!
Where can you get fondant sheets printed? Someone just asked me if i could do the wedding cake version of it on line. Can you get large sheets printed? also what did you use for a glaze over it?you did a great job!!
