Cake Disaster- What did I do wrong?

For my daughters 4th birthday I did this cake. However it was really hot and humid that day and as soon as I covered the cake in fondant, before I could flatten it on the cake it started cracking and breaking around the cake. Was the fondant too thick or could it have been heat related? I want to make sure so it won't happen again? I tried to cover mistakes as best I could but I was upset at my end result.

What kind of fondant did you use?

I think your cake is adorable and I'll bet your daughter and all her friends were delighted with it!

Hold on, do you mean the cake in the picture is one you used for your inspiration, or that it is actually a picture of the cake you made? The one you are calling a disaster? Because I think it looks really sweet!

Thanks that is my final product. I covered up mistakes and put them towards the back of the cake, but I'm usually pretty hard on myself and would like to know how to prevent the breaking from happening again.

It may very well have been the heat. I have a hard time with my fondant when it is very hot and humid. I find that in warm weather I need to make sure my fondant is coloured the way I want the day before I need to use it so that it has overnight to firm up again from kneading the colour through. Then I knead it just enough to be workable before I roll it out.

Wilton fondant is not very forgiving.

It's never "just cake!"

You may get a cake for $way to little but you won't get this cake!

1st, your cake is awesome!  Not at all a disaster.

2nd, Wilton fondant is CRAP and a beast to work with!  Seriously, I hate it.
