A I need to make this ruffle but ombre. How would I attach it to the cake without it falling off. Do I need to use half fondant and half gumpaste or all gumpaste. Also I'm traveling 4 hours away to the mountains with it. How do I stack the fondant layers perfectly so that I do not have to cover up the bottom edges with piping? Or has anyone ever used royal icing to fill in the bottom edges? The cake will be on a cake stand or pedestal not a cake board, any advice about how to transport it like that? Thank you.

That's really pretty.

1. I would use just fondant.

2, Attach it with whatever kind of edible glue you prefer. Gumpaste dissolved in water is good.

3. Clean bottom edges take a lot of practice. Yes, you can fill it in with royal icing. Actually, that cake would look just as good with a tiny bead border, too.

4. For a 4 hour trip into the mountains, unless you have someone to babysit the cake, I wouldn't attempt to transport it on a cake stand. Put it on when you reach your destination.

I just did one like this actually, I just used fondant, stuck it on with a bit of water.

I agree with a simple small bead border, you will barely notice it. It just takes a lot of practice to get the edges perfect.

you can mix fondant with water to make it pipe-able to fill in spaces.

Her is my ombre ruffle, done in short pieces.https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/148742_465207690206830_1816954936_n.jpg

Is your fondant pre-colored? I love that darkest purple color. Wondering if you colored it or is it better to buy vibrant colors like that

I colored my fondant. started with the darkest and kept adding white.. it you have a specific color to match, for me it is easier to start with white. if color match is not an issue, start with pre colored.

Do you make the ombre ruffle all in one piece to go up and down the cake or is this done in several and attached?  I have one to do next week and she wants tan, cream, and white.  I really like the looks of your cake.  Please tell me how you attached your ruffle.  Did you mix anything with your fondant to get it to stiffen up to keep it look like you did?

Thanks for any help you can give me.  The wedding reception is out doors and the fondant is really touchy with humid warm weather.

for each color, I  took a strip of fondant about 8" long and pre-ruffled it a bit, then attached it with gum glue. when I did the next strip, I tucked it in the curve of the previous ruffle.

I put just a bit of tylose in the fondant, not too much.
