I have been asked to make a traditional, boring cake as a joke for someone's birthday because they hate birthday's? This is the only request as far as decorations go along with white buttercream and cake. They really want it boring. I can add color with the writing but everything else has to be white. I am stumped. Any ideas on how I can decorate this cake so it won't look like it's poorly decorated but still carry the joke of the cake across? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

AI would think either white butter cream or fondant and some generic grocery store icing writing color like blue or red or yellow. Too far with the decorations and you go outside of the clients wishes. Sounds like a "boring" cake to me. You could do a shell border of some kind but with the request for no color idk..

Thanks to both of you! I was wondering if I could even do a border icon_cry.gif. When I think of a boring, traditional cake I think of something like old school buttercream piping but that probably goes too far.  Then I think of just a plain cake with no decorations ugh!

AIt could look very elegant, especially without any borders. Crisp edges and maybe some color with a 3d number topper, very simple but could also look very good. :)

Well, I just talked with someone who is relaying all the info wanted on this cake. I could do something in all white but if I did any decorations the cake should like a cake gone wrong. If I do a bow put it in a weird place. Any decorations should look like were placed a little off. Now my head is spinning. icon_confused.gif

Thank you Annabakescakes! I just went to the website but haven't found a thing yet. I have worked hard to learn  how to do a cake and make it presentable. I could have done easily a couple of years ago easily lol! Not that I am in no way a professional. It's like working backwards. Still trying to find a picture of a all white cake wreck.

AOn no! Anna was kidding!

If you really want examples, type "all white birthday cake" in google or another search engine.

Oops! I didn't catch that she was joking. Probably because I am desperate too find something icon_cry.gif l I have checked cake wrecks and everywhere else I can find. Still no ideas. They want smooth frosting and anything I put on the cake has to be misplaced? The person who is communicating all the info to me had it wrong in the beginning. This cake is for someone who is not traditional. So no traditional cake. Everything but writing has to be white. I am coming up with nothing.

when you level the top, make one side shorter (not so much that it looks topsy-turvy, just enough to look off). for the writing, use block letters and skew both the spacing and alignment, and misspell the message. use simple balloons that face any direction but up. switch border style midway. example attached...

sad birthday

Just a few idea's that came to me - when reading this.  When you 1st said - not to look like a birthday cake - I though - have it look like something else - shaped as a candle (lots of examples in Christmas cakes) - or make it an irregular shape.   Then when you said non-traditional - I thought about white tone on tone.   if you google white chocolate shards on cake - you'll get a lot of ideas of encompassing the cake in chocolate shards.  Diff white chocolates - are different colors, so you can even do a tone on tone with that.  Here is a link to a cake someone posted here, that maybe can be done with white on white - or white & off white.http://cakecentral.com/g/i/2962832/stripes-and-flowers-inspired-by-jessica-harris-craftsy-class/

I know the instructions have been confusing on this one because the person who wants the cake is relaying instructions to someone else and they are calling me. A couple of times they got a few things mixed up. So I am sure this has been confusing to read as it was for me to try to figure it out. Thanks kpny beautiful ideas for cakes. The person wants a cake that looks like "it went wrong". Those cakes are too pretty for that. Beautiful ideas though

AWrite happpy birthday so and so but make half of it down the side of the cake like it wouldn't fit. Perhaps write a name that is very similar to said person and cross it out.

Those are great ideas! However, they were specific about what to write on the cake. The name ..... Birthday? The trailing down the side of the cake is a great idea. As you can tell I wish I could do more with the cake. Even the decorations are to be all white except for the writing. Argh!!!!

Ok  after explaining all these great ideas, I thought the cake with the balloons had won except they wanted white balloons? I got a call from them later, they actually came up with a decent idea. The top of the cake has the writing and around the sides I can put color! Yay! They want candles around the cake  (from icing). They can be sideways with the "flame" dripping. Still worried about this one but at least I have something definite that they want. Thanks for all your help!

Well I had a feeling this one would cause me some trouble. It was my own doing. I should have put this on a larger cake board. I did the best I could with it. The side is supposed to look like fire and wax dripping from the candles. I had strict instruction only to put the writing and no color on the top. What do you think?
