Faux tier on 4 tier wedding cake advice

I'm getting ready to make my 1st 4 tier cake. I've only made 3 tier cakes in the past. The bride is requesting a faux tier and mentioned the bottom 12 inch. I was thinking the 10 might be a better option, so they can cut into the 12 inch like tradition. Also, I usually make my cake tiers around 5 inches and noticed the faux only come in 3 and 4. I'm thinking of maybe incorporating a double stack cake, since the faux tier is smaller then I usually make. Any thoughts or experience would be appreciated:)

I have an experiment you should do that will help you decide how you want to make this cake. Take a styrofoam dummy and stack some cakes on it.....or you could substitute something else similar in weight. Pick the whole thing up and move it from one side of you room to the other.

 

You'll discover that when the styro. is the bottom tier having the weight of real cakes on top of it makes it really awkward to move. It's top heavy. You'll really have to brain storm how to secure your cakes onto that styro so the cakes on top won't tip over. It's really hard to transport this kind of cake.

 

Then place the styro. as your top layer and move your cake around. It's a breeze. You can't even tell there is a styro. in the stack. Then place the styro. in the middle and move around your cake.

 

Yes, you can place a Styrofoam dummy at any point in the stack. But you'll find that it's easier to transport your cake if it's not top heavy.

I like having the fake tier on the bottom.  You just use a wooden skewer or two to connect the real cake to the foam dummy on the bottom.  The dummy just becomes a giant board/support for the cake.

That's what I was wondering. Does the bride and groom cut into the second tier? I've heard of having a trapdoor with a slice of cake, so it looks like they're cutting the bottom cake. Have you heard of this before?

I just tell the bride and groom to cut the top tier, that's what most couples do anyway, from the couple hundred weddings I've been to, lol.

 

I prefer the bottom to be styro, for one thing it's way less confusing for the caterers, haha. I just use a center dowel when I do that, to keep everything in place and attached to the board.
