This is probably a silly question but is RKT used mainly for decoration or as part of the cake to eat? I've always covered my cakes with Wilton's fondant ( I Know..) but it always gets hard as a rock and tastes bad but is great for sculpting. So if they don't eat the RKT I can use it to finish the RKT. But is the RKT sculpture  used more for decorating or eating? On TV I see great sculptures made of RKT but still wonder if it's to be eaten or what. Are you supposed to make a cake so they can eat that.

Personally, I use RKT as part of the cake - to be eaten.  I used to use gumpaste for decorations and would tell my customers that while the gumpaste is edible, it has no flavor, so I don't recommend eating it.  I didn't see anything wrong with a heads up, but a few friends pointed out that I shouldn't do that.  Let them decide whether or not to eat it.  It is edible, so there shouldn't be any worries on my end.  I don't really use gumpaste anymore, so that took care of the "heads up."   Now, I like to use modeling chocolate and fondant for smaller decorations and RKT for the bigger decorations and figures.  Tastes MUCH better!  If you are not up to making your own fondant, perhaps you could make modeling chocolate to cover your RKT?  Just chocolate and corn syrup and then you have edible "clay."   If you would like to make your own fondant, I recommend Michele Foster's Fondant recipe, found here on CC.  MFF's consistency can be a lot like Wilton's, but the taste is fabulous!  Very versatile recipe, as you can add any flavorings you want.

I recently did a treasure chest cake with a cake base and a RKT lid.  It was my first time using RKT in one of my cakes, and I didn't know if people would consider it decoration or something to eat as part of the cake.  In the end, the kids were almost as excited about getting RKT as they were about getting cake! :)  So it's up to the people you're serving it to, but it's pretty tasty and certainly edible, so I wouldn't be surprised if it gets eaten as well. :)

Like she said, modeling chocolate is the best option. Who doesn't like chocolate covered RKT? Mmmm mmm good
