Making a pond out of gel

Newbie here! I want to make a pond on a cake with blue Wilton Sparkle gel. The cake will be iced in green. Can I put the blue gel on top of the green icing? Or would it be better if I put white underneath the pond?

I have never used the sparkle gel, I used piping gel. It turned out like this http://cakecentral.com/g/i/2992601/a/3341488/marble-cake-with-brown-sugar-and-vanilla-wafer-sand-and-white-icing-blue-piping-gel-water/

I think the sparkle gel is not as translucent as the piping gel though. Not sure what it would look like with green. You could always try it out first on a practice board or plate or something.

I've made a pond using piping gel dyed blue. I did put a layer of blue candy melts on the bottom of the pond.  Mine was on fondant not sure about on top of icing.
