Hello - I have to make a giant hot dog cake with mustard and sauerkraut! Any ideas on how to make the sauerkraut? Someone on CC had a beautiful hot dog cake with sauerkraut - but the only thing she mentioned was that she used coconut and icing. Not sure about the technique. I'm new to CC and think this is such an awesome site - so many talented people willing to help out fellow bakers - yeah :-) Thank you!
I was thinking you could color fondant to match the color of sauerkraut - drab gray? - then using a clay gun (Merkin's has a green one that works great), squeeze out using the die with the bunch of round holes in it, several inches of strands. Cut them in 1 - 1 1/2" long strips, then place them on top of your hot dog.

coconut is what I would use since sauerkraut is finely chopped like coconut is just tint it with gel colors and maybe mix with some piping gel to make it look wet
My grandparents live near a saurkraut factory...it is not a drab gray...it's more a very faint mustard yellow I suppose. I would use the coconut, but I would try to make it wet and stringy looking. I would say that using gel colors would achieve that look. That is how I would go about it...but I've never done it before so I would be anxious to see how it looks.
She said coconut and piping gel. The piping gel gives it the sheen. Just add the piping gel a little at a time until you get the look you want.
