Hi everyone, first post here so please be nice!!

So, I'm going to a friend's birthday party on saturday, it's a "Gentleman's Party", so moustaches, monacles, top hats and suits all the way!

I'm making a cake to take, and my original idea was to take a 12" round sponge, cut it like a "yin-yan" symbol, flip one piece over, and stick the 2 "fat ends" together to look like a stylised-moustache. (Make sense?!) Cover the whole thing in dark brown buttercream, and bob's your proverbial father's brother.

However, I'm thinking this might not be quite enough cake, so maybe I could add a top hat cake as well... easy enough, just a tall 4 or 5" round cake covered in black fondant, on a 5 or 6" board also covered the same. BUT (and here's where I'd like some advice please!) I'd quite like to place the top hat at a jaunty angle to the moustache, you know, kinda propped up against it... base resting on it? Difficult to describe what I mean, but if you imagine the moustache was your head, and the top hat was on your head at about the 2 o'clock position?

How could I do this without either the "tall" part of the top hat sliding off or toppling, and without squashing the moustache??? Can it even be done?! I'm sure it can, but I can't quite fathom it out.... :(

Sorry I didn't see your post until just now...busy weekend with a wedding cake for my friend's son.

I do extend a warm welcome to you on this site; it is a very helpful place IMO.  As most of the members are making cakes for the weekends, I have noticed that there isn't as much activity or maybe 'not as quick responses' during the later part of the week.  Does that make sense?  Not sure if others would agree, but it is something I have noticed.  Of course one has to understand that business comes first, before answering questions on a forum.  Be sure to post again with any questions; I have found the information from experienced cakers to be just wonderful!  They are a very helpful group and I appreciate them taking the time to respond to my questions.

Just wondering if you made the cake with the moustache?  It sounded like it would have looked great.  Maybe you could post a pix of your cake?  I am curious about the top hat feature; neat idea, but I wouldn't know how to do it.
