I have made a couple "red" gumpaste shoes and now that they have dried it looks like a faded red/dark pink color. Is there any way I can get the shoe to be more red? I was thinking about whipping out my airbrush and airbrushing them or thinning out some red dye and painting it on. Any suggestions?

That's exactly what I was going to suggest. And then probably top it off with some sort of edible varnish.

What type of edible varnish would you suggest? I tried cornsyrup before and it ended up spreading out and looking very splotchy.

Haven't the slightest idea what would be a good edible varnish, but I'm just about certain that corn syrup would NOT be. I'm sure somebody here would know.

Never tried powdered color before. The cake is for monday though so I'm not sure I have time to order anything else and we don't have a supply store near us except Michael's.

How did you mix your red?  I add orange color first, knead the gumpaste, then add red color, quite a bit.  It always works well for me.

Have no clue for the varnish.

I added a dark pink first then red. Americolor super red and it still looks redish just faded like its been sitting out in the bright sun for several days. I just want to know how to make what I already have made a brighter red. Thanks!

Then try adding orange instead of pink to see if that is the shade you are looking for.

It won't be on it's own, you will have to add something to get the color to pop.  The only way I really get my gumpaste red is to use power color to color the gumpaste, then give it a good dusting after to pop the red.  I love CK's cherry pink.  Take a bit, activate it with Everclear, kneed into the gumpaste, let it sit or a few hours to mature, make whatever item you want, let it dry then use the same powder color to dust over the top.  Steam to set.  I also have several shades of petal dust and Crystal Colors red to get the shade I want and depth.

Hi I am a "new" baker and my first post here. I know it's too late for this time but Satin Ice makes a terrific Red Fondant which you can use for flowers. It's Vanilla flavored. I had to make Red Roses for my sister-in-law's wedding cake and they came out beautifully. My cake supply store also suggested the Americolor red, which I bought but they said I would probably have to use the whole bottle. They also had a cake in their window using the Red Satin Ice and it was the shade I was looking for and the bride loved them.
