Ok, I am a little confused, I have been reading posts about covering cakeboards and have a few more questions. Hope I am not being repetitive, Anyway, I am doing a wedding cake this weekend, it is a l6",12" and 8", I was going to cover my cake board (base) with fondant. Do You think foamcore boards would be strong enough or do I need to use masonite. I was going to put two 1/2" foamcore for base, what do you think? Also, if I cover with fondant, am I supposed to cut out a circle in the middle, if so, why? Any suggestion will be very appreciated!!

I don't know if I'd trust foam core for a large cake, I use plywood. I think people cut out the circle just to save a little fondant, I've never heard that it had any purpose!

Happy decorating!

An inch of foamcore will be plenty strong for your cake.

To make it easy to handle the cake when on the board, I'd suggest adding an inset underboard--perhaps another 1/4-1/2 inch circle of foamcore that is about 1-2 inch smaller than the main board. This allows you to get your fingers under the bottom when setting it on the table. It makes it easier to move the cake around on the table and no pinched pinkies!
