How do I do the lines in this cake

I have been debating on the best way to do the lines on this cake.  The cake is iced in buttercream and I was thinking I could use a toothpick or some other tool, but I was wondering if someone else had a better idea.  It looks to me that the buttercream crusted and then they dragged the tool thru the icing.  What do you think????  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!!!!

There's a Wilton tool that will do that.

I didn't think of using the Wilton Cake marker.  Thanks for the tip.  What if I don't want the lines completely straight?

Or take a tip of a knife, poke it in a bit as you turn the cake on the turntable, repeat for each line.

I would balance  or brace my hand/arm to keep them relatively straight though.  Don't want them too wonky either.

Thanks Ladies,

 

I tried several different techniques last night on a practice cake and it turns out letting the cake crust completely was not a good idea.  Next time, I will have to do it as soon as I am done frosting the cake.  It gave me lots of frosting crumbs and made it look not so nice. 

 

I tried the Wilton tool and a toothpick.  Those did not produce lines similar to the one in the photo.  I think that it needs to be a bit wider.  I am going to try a knife or something similar. 

 

I have been examining the photo and it almost looks like the lines are at a slant or angle.  What do you think?  Or are my eyes playing tricks on me...LOL.  I have been looking at this cake for a while and could totally be seeing things that aren't there.

Put more icing on, sounds like it is way too thin. And before crusting will make a big difference.

You can use a tapered spatula to make a texture like that. Just hold the tip at a slight angle while you turn the cake on the turntable. There's a nice tutorial on MyCakeSchool if you have a subscription.
