Hello, I have an order this weekend I would like to use the 1M tip to do buttercream roses - I love this technique, However, the customer does not want the entire cake covered in the roses as you often see. She would like a buttercream frosted cake with delicate scrollwork and accent flowers - in blue and mauve. It is a 10" round so I don't need a ton of decoration. Has anyone used the 1M roses other than to cover a whole cake with them? Do they look as nice? I was thinking maybe small bunches of them around the base of the cake and maybe a set of three on top of the cake - leaving the rest for piped scrollworkm probably white on white. Thoughts? Would this be too busy?

Second options is to do piped hydrangeas - which I have never done before - but are a natural choice for the colours that I have been given.

I'd really appreciate your advice or thoughts on the design.

Thanks

AWhen I do roses with the 1m I find them to be quite large so I'm not sure if they would work in bunches around the base with that size star tip. I also question whether they are structured enough to stand on their own or in small bunches. En masse they can be striking, but I'm not so sure about smaller splashes of them. And given their lack of dimension in small bunches, I don't think they would look tidy as a bunch of three on top of the cake. I'm the sort of person who lacks imaginative vision, though. I'd have to draw it out on paper to wrap my mind around the look before i could decide. Is there a reason traditional buttercream roses aren't an option?

Not officially... except I hate traditional buttercream roses :) Ha ha. I don't like piping them either! I showed them a more"traditional" celebration cake - with piped borders and roses and etc and they said they were interested in something more modern and less like a grocery store cake. That tends to be my personal feeling as well so that's why I introduced the 1M rose cake idea. They loved the roses but found it "too much". I think I may try for hydrangeas because I am also not a fan of flowers on cakes that are in lurid and unrealistic colours - blue roses often look kinda cheesey unless the colour is done just right. But I think a mound of hydranges flowers is more natural looking considering that is how they grow anyways. Thoughts?
