Lightning McQueen cake with buttercream?

Hi....I have received an order for a lightning McQueen cake with buttercream only, no fondant....is it possible to get the nice smooth finish that fondant gives with buttercream?....what do you guys think?....also, can I make a simple cherry filling by mixing in sliced maraschino cherries with buttercream?....

Thanks

As far as the cherry's, no idea. I have a severe dislike for maraschino cherries. But you can definitely get the cake smooth. Hot spatulas always work for me. I have also used the Melvira method quite a few times. There is a tutorial on here.

I did a Lightening McQueen cake in buttercream a few years ago. I used the Melvira method and it worked well.

You're welcome! Turned out good. It gets better and better with practice. People around here aren't big on fondant so I have had to learn to get my buttercream smooth to look like it. Glad we helped!
