I was just asked to make a cake for a friend with a roaring 20's theme.  I found this cake idea, (I didn't make this cake, I found it online).  My question is:  Should the "threads" be royal icing?  Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best way to create this look?  I'm new to this site and appreciate all the knowledge and experience!

I think that's real, fabric fringe. Not edible, but easy to remove prior to serving.

Thanks Leah_s!  Do you think I could create the look with icing or would it be too delicate?  I've used the grass tip to cover a cookie monster and teddy bears but never did anything vertically.

IMO, I think it would be waaay to delicate. But, me being the experimenter, would try it and have the fringe as a backup. Let us know how it works out!

You could try doing it in fondant. Cut a wide ribbon and slice it to make the fringe. Again, keeping the fabric trim as Plan B  because you just never know.

If you wanted to try piping, maybe the Wilton tip #134 would work??

I want to thank everyone for their help.  I didn't have time to experiment, so I bought fabric fringe.  I only needed a 2 layer cake, as opposed to the larger one in the photo I had chosen, so one row of fringe worked great.  Thanks again!
