AHi Not a professional baker just doing this as a hobby. Decided I wanted to try and incorporate a ball cake into a three stack tier, and decorate it like a globe. Now my usual sponge recipe is a no go for this as the practice one I did the bottom half of the ball completely collapsed. I had a thin board separating both cake halves and thought this might be enough but it wasn't. I plan on trying a denser cake and only separating and filling each half into two layers instead of four but can I add dowels do you think? If so would you dowel all the way through and lose the middle cake board in the ball pan or would you dowel right through and cut a hole in the board? My recipe for the other tiers is fine, tried and tested, I don't know why this is being so funny. Rung out of time now too as I have to start the cakes on Thursday evening as there's going to be quite a lot of decoration on the other tiers. Thanks for all your helps xx

AI feel so stupid I've just realised there's a forum search function! Sorry! Will see if I can get an answer from there! ::red faced::

AI actually had a nightmare about this cake last night.. Have to start the other tiers this evening and its just super knock my confidence in it all, I'm thinking even my first two tiers are gonna sink and collapse...usually it's the decoration that's the stressful part but this is silly!

Don't stress, you can do it.  I'm not sure where you are planning on incorporating the globe but if there is a tier on top you may want to get an acrylic stand.  Below is a picture of one of my early cakes where I used the ball cake using an acrylic stand (example from ebay pictured below).  I was not making cakes from scratch at the time so I used pound cake from a mix.  I made the ball as just a two layer cake and then inserted the tube from the stand through the ball to support the upper tiers.  The stand did not show at all.  Good luck, would love to see a picture when you are done.

ASo the cakes are made, finished, just ready to be delivered tonight (and set up tomorrow am) I know it's not ideal but its literally a mile from my house and tomorrow I will be attending the event and don't want to lug a 12"x12"x5" cake amongst the other layers and other bits and pieces in thorough the main door in heels!! I can drive up to the door this evening.

The ball did not (haha so far) collapse on itself like my other did thanks to the bits and piece of advice I picked up on here in the other posts, fingers crossed it all holds tomorrow assembled. Then I will explain more and post pics

ASo it was fine, everyone loved it! Obviously there are bits I'm not happy with and I know where all the flaws are, but seeing that I can count the number of fondant decorated cakes on one hand I don't think I've done too bad. The main concern was the weight of the overall cake and the weight of the gumpaste church and last cake pushing down on the chocolate globe cake, but its been fine.

They said that they wanted a cake based on a story about a swallow that migrates to South Africa for the winter. This swallow lives in a UK church and stops at different churches on the way down. The story is called "where in the world.?" They liked it which is the important thing :)

Very nice job!  What did you finally end up using for support?

AI used standard plastic dowels in the 12" and 10" bottom two cakes. Then for the ball I split each half into two parts and filled with vanilla buttercream. In between the two halves I placed a cake board and each half had their own dowels. Then to attach the small tier on top I had two dowels through the top half of the ball cake and slightly through the cake board of the top tier. Then the church on top was just placed.

Bit of a balancing job and I've learned from this which is the main point
