I'm making a wedding cake for my mother, it's a story cake.  In order to tell her story I need 5 layers and it's too much cake for her reception.  I will be using a 14" dummy, 12" chocolate, 10" carrot, 8" yellow, and a 6" dummy.  It's my first time using a dummy and real cake together.

I've looked through all the posts I could find on the subject and found a ton of great advice.  I never even thought to sand the edges so the fondant wouldn't tear. I think I'll use crisco before applying the fondant too.

I have a question.  When I stack the cake, is the 14" dummy really strong enough that I don't need support?  or should I be safe and put dowels in anyway?

I will probably deliver it with the 14" and 12" stacked, the 10" alone, and the 8" and 6" stacked.

Thank you so much for your advice,

Elizabeth

Yes!  Stand on it and see for yourself that it's strong enough!  Dowels aren't necessary.
