I would like to make one but was wondering, if I make an 8" cake for practice;

#1   How high will it be?

#2   How much batter should I use for each layer.

Given that there are 6 colors, I am imagining a very tall cake with all the layers, filling and icing.  Am I right or should my cake layers be about the height of a pancake so to speak.

TIA

When I have made them, I make the layers 1/2" high, mine end up about 5" high, and I use 8 colours. I don't use much filling at all, and use a leveler to make sure the layers are exact.

As far as batter goes, that really depends on your recipe. My basic white cake, (that I just add colouring to), would take about a cup of batter, and that would give me just over 1/2". Then I can level it off perfectly.

Thank you scrumdiddlycakes, I always use the WASC recipe which leaves me with more than enough cake batter to fill 2 - 8" round cake pans.

Can I ask you what colors you use?  For rainbows I thought it was Red, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple.  Am I missing a couple of colors?

AMine are 6 layers about an inch each, so about. 6 inches total once leveled and filled. I did red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. I've seen some people throw pink in there next to the red, and some do a light blue and dark blue, but I like the simplicity the main 6 colors add to an already busy cake.

I also do a pink layer, and a light and a dark blue layer. I liked the half inch layers but thought it needed more height, so I added 2 extra.

I also colour my butter cream to match, so you don't get the white lines in between, and heat it a little, so I can spread it really thin.

I just did a rainbow cake and it was about six inches high.  I used a cup of batter in 6in pans and about a cup and half for 8 in pan.  I used 6 colors.

Hi auntginn,

ROYGBIV - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. Although when I made one recently, I merged indigo and violet into just one layer of purple. I didn't want a toweringly tall cake, so I divided the usual amount of batter required to make a regular cake into 6 and coloured them accordingly. This means each cake layer is very thin, but when put together (along with layers of buttercream), it'll look fine.

Here's the one I made.. I wish the layers were more even, and I really need to work on my ruffles! Hope that helps :)

Oh... I like that.  Looks good Allycrumbs

Ok so don't kill me, but does anybody make your colors with flavors, such as red - cherry,  yellow - lemon and so on?  Or would that be just too many flavors?

I think it would be overkill, 6 different flavours would just end up getting muddled.

I have had a few desserts that did that many different components well, but that doesn't involve needed a colour/falvour to match, it would be nearly impossible to get so many complimentary flavours in coordinating colours.

I have also seen posts about rainbow cakes are flavored differently per color.  I've seen jello used and I've seen just fruit extracts.  They all said it tasted good, but I do have a hard time imagining it.  Google "rainbow cake with different flavors" and you will get a bunch of options for how to flavor them differently.  If you try it, let us know how it goes!

KimmyG, thank you.  I will be doing this one tonight.  Will let everyone know how it goes.  I might also let my layers be a little larger.  My cake testers are a group of kids.  They won't care about height. lol
