Hello, I recently attempted to bake a checkerboard 8" square cake. I couldn't find a pan like the round Wilton one I already have so I purchased various sized square pastry rings and tried to use them like the plastic rings in the round set. This failed miserably. When I removed the squares and baked my layers, i found that all the batter had run together and it really looked like a marbled cake. Has anyone ever attempted this? I am almost ready to use the squares and just cut out cake "rings" after the cakes are cooled and leveled. In my mind this should work if the round ones work in the Wilton pan. What did I do wrong???? Thanks all.
Most of the square or rectangle checkered cakes I have seen were pieced together from 1 chocolate and 1 vanilla cake, carved and stuck together with buttercream.
Thanks! Does this give a decent checkerboard pattern? I am just trying to wrap my head around it but I'd just cut out the square rings from the cakes and then glue the rings together with buttercream before layering my cake.... OK. I guess we try it this way since the first attempt failed.
