Hi I'm new here :)
I've been asked to make a cake which needs to be covered in black fondant. Whenever I try to dye fondant black it seems to taste strange :/. And also I don't think shop black fondant tastes so great.
Any advice on black fondant?
Thank you!
I use chocolate fondant and then you only need to use a little bit of black, and it tastes good. Great if you're using chocolate cake.
Satin Ice has a wonderful black fondant that tastes great and is a breeze since you don't have to dye it.
I also would use choc-fondant to start with. if you don´t want to need all the color in, try painting it afterwards. then you need less paste and the bitter taste is not that strong. like cazza1 said, you could airbrush it. if you don´t have one, you could by some of those cosmetic sponges that are ment for applying liquid make up and use this to paint with your (wodka diluted) gel-paste. the sponges are so soft and fine that you should not get a streeky look. I tried that recently on this cake and it worked out well...
I had problem too when I've tried to make a play station cake for my son. You can see it here, under no.7
I put a lot of colour to get a black colour.
But if you want a black, you should use a homemade fondant, I think it's taste is better.
Good luck
I too have trouble with the bitter taste of black. I only use satin ice now for black and red as i can't make these colours to my satisfaction and i really like the taste too.
