AI'm just starting out in this buisness, I've usually only made cakes my family. Now i have , friends of friends asking for cakes, cupcakes, cake and brownie pops. I truly dont know where to begin. I do know I want to learn all I can (should I take classes) because I want everything I create to be enjoyed

If you really want to learn then I suggest taking classes. I took Wilton's classes. It teaches you the basics of cake decorating. Different designs, fondant, gum paste, etc. You could look into that. Not sure about classes for cake pops. I know I have learned quite a bit from youtube. You can always find tutorials and such on there.

Michael's and Hobby Lobby (if you have one) usually offer Wilton classes. The stores near me do.  Good luck!

AI love craftsy.com. I have learned more from buying craftsy classes than I have any where else. You download it and you can watch it anytime. It's also yours forever. You also can post your project on the class board and talk to the instructor as well as students enrolled in the class. I love it.

ACraftsy classes really are great. I did the Wilton classes first, but they're pretty basic.

My favorite youtube videos are by seriouscakes and tonedna1.  They cover a huge variety of topics and the quality is very good.  More important than learning about decorating though would be to learn about the business side of things.  A written business plan, learning about pricing, contracts, marketing, making your business legal, insurance, web page development.  I think there is a craftsy class on starting a business but there are also probably thousands of business related threads on Cake Central.  I have found the best way to search CC is to use google.  Type in whatever you are interested followed by cake central and you have lots of relevant threads.  For example     pricing cake central           and you will be flooded with info on pricing.

I'm glad you mentioned it! There is way more to starting a business than the decorating and baking. There is more paperwork than baking, and you really need to start out right before you get into bad habits. I had to learn through many different errors, so I don't know how to point you in the right direction, but I wish someone would've told me how much work it was, and it had nothing to do with cakes.

Most of us got into this business because we looooved baking/decorating. But there's a difference between keeping your passion as a hobby, or moving your passion into creating a business. Cake Central can be a good place to learn, starting with google and the search function.

Unfortunately, in the recent past I've seen a distinct trend: hobby bakers who want to start selling and join CC to get quick answers without learning how to arrive at that answer (and therefore learn). Those who pay attention to instructional responses have a chance at succeeding. Those who are quick to snap at any perceived offense probably don't have the personality for long-term success. My opinion, please don't snap at me for having an opinion.

AWhere can I find a good tutorial for starting a business?

*please note that the above statement is very heavily sarcastic.

AI think people just get caught up in the whole 'you should do this as a business' thing and don't take the time to really consider what it involves. I certainly did, but luckily I found this site and all the really useful advice from those who have been there and been burned before me. Being able to bake and enjoying it don't mean you are going to have a successful business sadly.

Yeah, I know.

I was seriously doing some self-chuckling when I thought that up. My employees were looking at me strangely.

ACalling out to Aussie home bakers. I just want to step out from being a baker for friends and family and start a home based business. Just need a helping hand from someone out there with " how to" & regulations in Melbourne Australia please. :)
