A friend asked me to make a retirement cake for someone at my dentist's office. She wants a half-sheet with no message and no "theme". She just said "Make it really pretty." It's for a woman. I haven't done many (hardly any) sheet cakes, being a hobbyist only. I don't want it to look like something that they could get a WalMart: shell border on top and bottom and a bunch of gaudy colored buttercream roses and such.

I've searched Google and the Galleries all day and can't find anything that doesn't look like a bridal shower cake. I just want it tasteful, contemporary, maybe even understated. I think my imagination far exceeds my skill level!!  Any suggestions to help jump-start my brain? Thanks to anyone who takes the time.

You could do an ombre cake. Those are pretty popular right now. I did a buttercream ruffle cake that got great reviews. Or maybe a basket weave on the side and lots of flowers on top to look like a basket of flowers. All pretty but simple.

I'm not sure how detailed you want to get but you could do some really nice henna designs on the cake, or some brush embroidery.

Would that work on a sheet cake?

I've never even heard of henna designs (sounds really intriguing, though! Maybe for the future when I'm more experienced!)  Brush embroidery sounds interesting and I think I could do it after watching a few tutorials. Thanks for the ideas. Both of you who responded.

Henna designs are an indian design. Usually the henna is used on indian brides to decorate their hands and feet. But using the same technique with buttercream or royal icing on a cake. It looks really nice and you can get colourful with it as well. Google henna designs on cake and you will see many desins. Good luck on your cake!! :)

I like the chevrons! Yes all of those could be done with a sheet cake but I think the basket would look better in a round cake.

This ombre was done on a sheet cake. http://thefarmgirlcooks.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/cake-2.jpg
