AI am thinking of starting a home based bakery in ca, but I have no idea where to get information on business licenses or health codes, etc. Does anyone have any links our sources? I know the new cottage food industry law here allows the home based baking, and that changes things. Other threads about license requirements are 2 years old.

AWhich county are you in? Your county health dept should have all the information you'll need.

AI did try google, that's where I found out about the cottage food law. Just thought I would get the dl from more experienced bakers.

Do you have a dept of agriculture? that's where i found all the information for my state as well as going to the govt website for my state.

AI went straight to the county department of environmental health and they answered all of my questions. They gave me a checklist of things that needed to be done to become a CFO.

AThanks all. This is more just planning for the future. It's kind of a bummer that the new law allows home baking, but no dairy that would need to be refrigerated. I really prefer buttercream with actual butter, and cream based fillings are a favorite. Guess that moves my dream even farther off, but at least I know where to start. It's no fun calling around to govt offices and being told you need to call this office, and so on. Which is why I thought of asking those who actually know.

AJust because a recipe contains butter or cream doesn't necessarily mean it is not allowed. Contact your county health dept to confirm if your recipe can be sold under the cottage food license. If it can't, you can still look into renting a commercial kitchen.

my recipes contain butter. i submitted the ingredients list to OC and was approved. call your county and ask questions.

AThat's a relief. Still a little bummed about no cream fillings, but I doubt I will make enough $ to cover a commercial kitchen rental. It's all research at this point anyway
