I Need Your Opinion On What To Do!

I have been asked to make a Bumble Bee (from Transformers) cake for my cousin. They want a 1/2 sheet cake so I have plenty of room. I have decided on using a pattern because my freehand is not so great, lol. But, this will be my first time ever using a pattern! So...
Do you think it would be better to do a:
1. clear gel transfer with the star piping
2. Frozen buttercream transfer
I like the look of both, honestly. They seem equally time consuming, but the tutorials always make it look easier than it is ;)
IN your professional opinions, which do you think is easier to do? Any tips for either method that will help a noob along?
Thanks in advance for your help :)
Hi! I made some bumblebee transformer cupcakes and had the same dilemma. I seem to be doing more 2D & 3D cakes so I decided to cut them from a stencil I made. I just Googled for the coloring pages and cut the pattern out in pieces (easier to me than making cuts in the entire face). Since the pattern was in pieces, I cut 12 of each and sugar glued them to the fondant topper. Since you have more space to work with it would be easier for you to cut the pieces. Personally, I think cutting them is neater than buttercream transfer.
OH those turned out WONDERFUL! I really like the contrast and the way the fondant creates the depth! i DO have 2 weeks before it is due... and I have been wanting to play with fondant....
Maybe I will do a test or 2 and see how it turns out!
Thanks for sharing your awesome cupcakes!
AFondant is going to be neater and cleaner, unless you are AMAZING at buttercream transfers....
HAHA I wouldn't consider myself amazing at anything... lol! But I will try the fondant and see how it turns out. I have never used that either, so it will really be a toss up for as to which one I am successful at! I have my husband printing off transfers for me so I will play with the frozen tonight... and then when payday hits I can go get some fondant and play some more!
Thanks for your help!
OK the cake is finished! They were totally against any fondant... so I had to do the buttercream. Unfortunately, my kids all got strep this last week and that kind of put a kink in my "frozen" buttercream transfer hopes. So i went with the piping gel transfer. I think it turned out pretty good for never having used this method before! The borders I am not too thrilled... I wish I would have done something different. But all in all, for a noob I call it a success!!!
Would love to post a pic but my computer hates me at the moment and I have a meeting to get to!!
Just wanted to update and say THANKS!
